چکیده

Technology and business models share a common evolution within the Internet. To enable deployment of the technology within a service environment there is also the need to create a robust and stable business model. This tied destiny of technology and business factors is perhaps most apparent within the area of the interconnection of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Here there is both an interaction at a level of technology, in terms of routing signaling and traffic flows, and also an interaction of business models, in terms of a negotiation of benefit and cost in undertaking the interconnection. In this article we will examine this environment in some detail, looking closely at the interaction between the capabilities of the technical protocols, their translation into engineering deployment and the consequent business imperatives such environments create.

The Growing Complexity of Internet Interconnection

End-to-End (E2E) packet delivery in the Internet is achieved through a system of interconnections between heterogeneous entities called Autonomous Systems (ASes). The initial pattern of AS interconnection in the Internet was relatively simple, involving mainly ISPs with a balanced mixture of inbound and outbound traffic. Changing market conditions and industrial organization of the Internet hav...

Transit versus (Paid) Peering: Interconnection and Competition in the Internet Backbone Market

We examine the strategic interaction between interconnection and competition in the Internet backbone market. Networks asymmetric in size choose among different interconnection regimes, IP-Transit, Bill-and-Keep Peering, and Paid Peering, and compete for end-users. We show that sufficiently symmetric networks enter a Peering agreement while otherwise use an intermediary network for exchanging t...

Nash-Peering: A New Techno-Economic Framework for Internet Interconnections

The current framework of Internet interconnections, based on transit and settlement-free peering relations, has systemic problems that often cause peering disputes. We propose a new techno-economic interconnection framework called Nash-Peering, which is based on the principles of Nash Bargaining in game theory and economics. Nash-Peering constitutes a radical departure from current interconnect...

Internet Interconnection Economic Model and its Analysis: Peering and Settlement

Peering and transit are two types of Internet interconnection among ISPs. Peering has been a core concept to sustain Internet industry. However, for the past several years, many ISPs broke their peering arrangement because of asymmetric traffic pattern and asymmetric benefit and cost from the peering. Even though traffic flows are not a good indicator of the relative benefit of an Internet inte...

Enabling Coalition-Based Community Networking

Recent advances in local-area networking capabilities have enabled the emergence of a new class of community-based edge networks. These involve the direct interconnection of machines or local networks between community members. However, such interconnection, or peering, is usually carried out by individuals on an ad hoc basis and requires a level of expertise to configure and maintain. We prese...
